Hello you 💜
The key to changing your behavior, is understanding the emotional drivers behind your behavior.
No one here is singling out your compulsive chocolate egg-eating behavior over the weekend.
I'm simply referencing something financial psychologist Fleur Iannazzo mentioned last week, which will be our focus today:
Understanding the emotional drivers behind our money behaviors.
And we’ll do it just as she suggested.
👇
Get a big piece of paper and a pen
Write MONEY in the middle
Set a timer for three minutes
And finish this sentence: “MONEY is”
Some additional guidance from Fleur:
There'll be a point where you just go “oh I've run out of words” but push through it.
Have a note of what's coming out on the paper, especially the stuff that sounds irrational.
That’s when it bypasses the thinking part of your brain and it gets to the feeling part of your body.
Just go with the flow, you'll find it really interesting!
Let’s go ⏱️
Now, what do we do with all this introspection?
We could buy this candle and hope for the best.
Or we could look at this piece of paper and find out:
Which emotions enable our negative money behaviors?
Which emotions create obstacles to achieving financial goals?
Which emotions interfere with our capacity to save and invest wisely?
Which emotions undermine our confidence in managing money effectively?
Which emotions stop us from the financial freedom to make our life choices?
If it’s unclear to you, you could:
Take another piece of paper
Make two categories
HELPFUL emotion vs. NOT HELPFUL emotion
Because I research and write Money Feelings for you 🫡 , I was hoping you could share the emotions you find NOT HELPFUL with me.
It would help me understand what you need and how to prioritize your next Money Feelings sessions.
You can share them publicly in the comments:
